Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries
Last fall I purchased my first air fryer and from that very first recipe, it was instant love! I could not believe how fast I was able to cook up a whole turkey breast - or the level of flavor and juiciness the finished product had.
From that moment, I was hooked and started using my air fryer to cook up both traditionally fried items like chicken wings and tater tots as well as anything else I thought the fryer could handle including air fried chicken breasts and pork chops with a secret rub.
Each time my air fryer proved that it was the go-to item for tasty, healthy items for my whole family!
Why This Recipe Works
- Air fryer sweet potato fries are the perfect side dish for burgers, corn dogs, hot dogs, and ribs!
- Cook up a batch of air-fried sweet potato fries for the kids for a healthy afternoon snack.
- Create an amazing appetizer spread with air fryer sweet potatoes, mozzarella sticks, pizza pockets, and chicken wings for a no-fuss, crowd-pleasing assortment.
- Serve as-is or opt for your favorite condiments such as ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, or vinegar.
Ingredients
Your bag of frozen sweet potato fries comes already pre-seasoned. If you are a gluten-free eater or looking to keep your carbs low, be sure to read the label before you buy to look for that information. Trader Joes and Alexia are our go-to brands for sweet potatoes fries without a lot of additives and artificial ingredients, but Trader Joes brand fries do not have any added sugar where Alexia's does.
For the oil, you simply need a high-heat oil that your family likes the best.
- frozen sweet potato fries (1 lb bag)
- High heat oil (optional)
- Optional sauces– ketchup, tartar sauce
For your frozen sweet potato fries in the air fryer, you can air fry as many or as few as you want! A larger air fryer will allow you to cook more fries at one time though. We were able to cook ½ lb at one time with our Omni Plus air fryer.
NOTE: If you’re cooking in a basket style air fryer that’s already non-stick, you won’t need to brush the basket with cooking oil. If you have an aluminum air frying tray like our Instant Pot Omni Plus, we do brush a little oil on the pan before cooking to help prevent the frozen sweet potato fries in air fryer from sticking.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Frozen sweet potato fries temperature
Preheat to 400F, if your air fryer doesn't automatically do this for you just manually turn your model on for 3-5 minutes before cooking.
400F is our universal time for cooking the majority of air fryer frozen foods and snacks. You can lower the temp and cook the food a little bit longer but we have found that 400F is the best temperature for achieving that fried taste and texture.
It's ok to add oil or cooking spray if you have an aluminum air fryer basket, but if it's non-stick do NOT use cooking spray. Cooking sprays ruin the finish and will make the food in the non-stick basket STICK.
Lay the frozen air fryer sweet potato fries in a single layer, leaving space around the fries for best results. While some people might stack their fries and shake the basket frequently, they honestly don't turn out as well as placing them in a single layer.
Frozen sweet potato fries cooking time
The frozen sweet potato fries in air fryer already come pre-seasoned so this is a one-ingredient recipe! As an optional step, you can brush a little oil on the fries if desired, but many frozen fry brands already come with added oil.
Set the air fryer to a cook time of 12-15 minutes.
Flip the frozen sweet potato fries in the air fryer after 8 minutes if you have a basket style air fryer. Ours took a total of 12 minutes to cook, so 8 minutes on one side and 4 minutes on the other.
Air fryer models can differ in cooking time, so yours could even take up to 15 minutes to cook. A longer cook-time may also be needed if you are cooking a lot of fries at one time.
If you have a basket style air fryer, we recommend shaking the sweet potato frozen fries every 5 minutes.
Recipe Tips
- Keep your sweet potato fries frozen and don't defrost them before cooking.
- For crispier sweet potato fries, be sure to leave some space around the fries so the air can circulate.
- Give the fries a shake or toss at least once during the cook-time.
- Remember: Do not use cooking spray on a non-stick basket as it will ruin the non-stick finish.
- Serve your fries as a side dish or as part of an appetizer spread.
