This chicken sausage air fryer recipe is so good!
We usually eat some version of precooked chicken sausage once a week, they're simple, healthy, and they come in a ton of flavors so we never get tired of them. We especially love cooking chicken sausage in an air fryer since they always turn out juicy, flavorful, and perfectly browned.
You can even add multiple packs of the sausages, and as long as you shake them now and then, they'll all turn out perfectly juicy and browned.
You can also slice these and cook with veggies like we did with our air fryer sausage and veggies, which works great for precooked traditional pork sausages or the chicken variety.
Sometimes we also cook chicken sausages in the oven by tossing them on a big sheet pan with some vegetables and they get roasted for a simple dinner or as meal prep for the week.
What kind of fully cooked chicken sausages?
Wondering what is the best brand of cooked sausages to use? Our go to brand is the precooked Aidells chicken sausage, my favorite is the garlic gruyere and our kids favorite is the chicken apple. Other brands that work well:
- Trader Joes - they keep adding more and more flavors of cooked chicken options.
- Applegate dinner sausage - the chicken apple is always a fave and we love them since they're organic
- Alfresco chicken dinner sausage - they have unique flavors like spinach feta or pineapple bacon
Ingredients you'll need
We are using two different flavors of Aidells chicken sausage like their chicken and apple and garlic gruyere, but feel free to use your favorite brand or flavor.
- precooked chicken sausages - any brand will work here, look for sausages that are about the same size as what was used for recipe testing which is 3 oz for each sausage.
- cooking spray - only use this if you don't have a nonstick air fryer
- veggies - optional to add. Place the vegetables around the sausages during cooking, onions, bell peppers, zucchini, and green beans are all great quick cooking options.
You can use raw chicken sausage links as well, just add a few more minutes of cooking time (about 10-12 minutes in total) or until the internal temperature of the chicken sausage reaches 165 F.
Equipment
- Air Fryer- We used an air fryer basket, an air fryer oven will work also
- Tongs for flipping the sausages
How to cook chicken sausage in the air fryer
Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 370F for 5 minutes before cooking. This helps with even cooking time.
Step 2: Add the pre cooked sausage to the air fryer basket. You can lightly coat them with olive oil cooking spray or air fry them without oil.
Step 3: Cook the chicken sausage for a total of 8-10 minutes, flipping them over halfway through the cooking time. The internal temperature should be at 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Serve and enjoy!
Jen's tips
- Air fryer models can vary and some units cook hotter than others. Adjust the time as needed to heat them through and brown them to your liking.
- For best results, always check the internal temperature with a digital meat thermometer.
- To cook frozen sausages, add them to the air fryer and cook them up to 5 minutes longer depending on whether they were raw or pre cooked.
Serving ideas
We highly recommend that you serve the sausage with air fryer bell peppers and onions; however, If you have a large air fryer roasting quick-cooking vegetables such as sliced onions, peppers, green beans, or mushrooms at the same time with the sausages makes for a great one-dish meal.
Great sides also include potato wedges, sweet potatoes, a simple green salad, or roasted veggies.
Storage and leftovers
You can store leftover sausages in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Leftovers are great for lunch meal prep when paired with roasted veggies or a salad, plus a healthy starch like sweet potatoes or brown rice.
You can freeze cooked sausage for up to 3 months in the freezer.

David says
The Aidells package doesn't list cooked or uncooked chicken sausages. They look uncooked, but your recipes fall for precooked. its unclear to me.

I did find the small print Fully Cooked on the package.
It could be a bit larger ๐ป

I'll make that info more clear in the post, David! Thanks for reporting back! Jen
