How Many Carbs are in a Margarita?
If you’re wondering if a traditional margarita is keto friendly, the answer would be no. A margarita consists of tequila, orange liquor (which has sugar), simple syrup (which has sugar, lime juice, and salt. There are at least 11 net carbs in a margarita per serving.
By swapping the simple syrup for a keto simple syrup made with erythritol and using 1 oz of orange juice (3 net carbs) –orange extract substituted provided below also–in place of the 7 net carb in orange liquor, we were able to cut the carbs down and cut out processed sugar.
Our low carb margarita recipe has just 5 net carbs per serving, plus it’s literally the BEST keto margarita we’ve ever had! My friends seriously had no clue this was a low carb and sugarless cocktail.
What’s In a Keto Margarita?
The ingredients listed are the same whether you want a low carb margarita on the rocks or a blended aka frozen margarita. The keto margarita recipe makes 1 margarita, so feel free to double the recipe to share with a friend, or make even more to have a pitcher of low carb skinny margaritas for a group of friends.
Low Carb Skinny Margarita Ingredients
- 2 oz tequila
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1 oz orange juice or (1+ tsp orange extract)
- 1 oz keto simple syrup-recipe below (or 1 tsp liquid stevia)
- Coarse sea salt
While you’d never want to go eat an entire orange or a cup of orange juice on a low carb diet, just 1 oz of orange juice has 3 oz of carbs–which is definitely worth the sacrifice in my opinion! You can swap the carbs for a high-quality orange extract if you’d prefer, which is almost carb-free.
Keto Simple Syrup
To make one batch of keto simple syrup, you just need:
- 1/2 cup powdered Swerve
- 1 cup water
Heat the water in a small saucepan, add the powdered Swerve once it comes to a boil. Turn the water down to low and simmer the ingredients for 5 minutes.
Let the low carb simple syrup cool completely before using it in your margarita. You only need 1 oz per cocktail so this makes lots of extras for future drinks! Keeps for up to a month.

- Shaker
- Measuring glass
- Juicer
- Blender (to make blended margaritas)
How to Make Low Carb Skinny Margaritas
First things first, you’ll want to salt the rim of your margarita glass. Cut a lime into small sections and rub the lime juice from one along the edge of your glass. Pour a thin layer of course sea salt onto a small plate. Invert the glass upside down and twist it get it to cover the glass rim.
Fill up a shaker most of the way with ice. If you don’t have a shaker you can just mix things together in a glass, but using a shaker gives the drink an extra chill that simply makes the drink even fresher tasting. According to my husband, who wishes he could give up his day job to bartend, you shake the shaker until your hand hurts from the cold of the shaker.
Add the tequila, lime juice, orange juice, and keto simple syrup to the shaker. Shake vigorously.
Fill a margarita glass up with ice and pour the shaken low carb margarita over the ice. Serve with a lime wedge.
Making a keto frozen margarita
Making a keto frozen margarita isn’t much different than the recipe listed above.
You simply want to add your low carb margarita ingredients to a pitcher along with 2 cups of ice and blend it until the ice is crushed.
Serve with a lime wedge and enjoy!

Low Carb Keto Margaritas
A low carb and keto friendly margarita that takes just 5 minutes and has 5 net carbs per serving. No one will know this skinny margarita is sugar free!
Ingredients

You can substitute liquid stevia to taste instead of making low carb simple syrup.
