Aperol Spritz Recipe
We just visited Italy as a family for the first time and it was our first experience tasting Aperol spritzes. We were instantly all hooked and proceeded to order them just about every day the rest of the trip, PLUS they've become our go-to favorite summer cocktail.
Serve the Aperol spritz cocktails with antipasto salad or our tomato burrata salad for a light Italian inspired summer meal.
Ingredient Notes
Making an Aperol spritz cocktail just takes 3 simple ingredients, once you make this a few times you'll have the spritz recipe memorized!
We include instructions for making Aperol's spritzes as a single serving beverage by the glass, you of course can quadruple it or more to serve it by the pitcher over ice.
- Aperol
- Prosecco - our favorite is La Marca brand from Italy
- Club soda or plain sparkling water
** Please see the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the exact quantities **
Equipment
- wine or cocktail glasses - we love to use stemless wine glasses
- Liquid measuring shot glass - great for measuring out precise liquid quantities for cocktails
Step by Step Instructions
Fill a large wine glass ⅔ full with ice, we especially love to use stemless wine glasses.
Add the Aperol, sparkling wine such as Prosecco, and a splash of plain sparkling water or club soda, and stir to combine.
Garnish as desired with the classic orange slice or other great options are strawberries or mint slices. Another popular garnish in Italy is green olives! Serve immediately and enjoy.
Recipe Tips
- Garnish the spritz recipe with orange slices, mint, strawberries, or green olives.
- We've experimented a lot with the perfect Aperol spritz ratio and our recipe includes our family's favorite version. You of course can increase or decrease the Aperol to your liking or increase or decrease the Prosecco as well.
- For a stronger/slightly larger cocktail (aka what I make my husband), I use the ratios of 3 oz Aperol, 3 oz Prosecco, and 1 oz club soda.
- Another popular way to make an Aperol spritz cocktail is with the ratios of 3-2-1, meaning 3 oz Prosecco, 2 oz Aperol, and 1 oz club soda.
Common Questions
For a traditional aperol spritz cocktail, you'll want to use a sparkling prosecco that has a fruity flavor profile. Our personal favorite is La Marca Prosecco from Italy.
If you're looking to switch things up, you can also experiment with different types of sparkling wine like Champagne or Cava.
Aperol is a type of aperitivo, a category of bitter liqueurs that are typically served as an apéritif before a meal. The most notable difference between Aperol and Campari is their respective alcohol content levels, with Aperol coming in at just 11% ABV while Campari contains a much higher 26% ABV.
Additionally, Aperol is more citrusy and floral than Campari, It's made with a blend of herbs and roots, and has a distinct orange color. Campari is more robust and bitter, with a bright red color.
Aperol should be stored in a cool, dark place like a pantry or liquor cabinet. Once opened, it will last for up to a year. Drink your Aperol spritz cocktails immediately to avoid having the bubbles from the sparkling wine deflate.
- aperol sour
- aperol and tonic
- aperol margarita
- aperol gimlet
- aperol old fashioned
