Once you know how to steam broccoli in the microwave, you will see how quick and easy it is to serve this super healthy vegetable to your whole family. Use a covered dish, steamer bag, or silicone steamer to make perfect microwave broccoli every time.
On a cutting board, cut the broccoli crown from the stem. Break the broccoli spears into bite-sized pieces with clean hands or cut them with a knife.
Add 3 tablespoon of cold water to the bottom of the dish you're using, whether it's a glass/porcelain microwave-safe baking dish OR a silicone microwave steaming basket.
Place the broccoli sections into the bottom of the dish. If you are using a glass dish, the broccoli will go directly into the water. If you have a silicone steaming basket, then the water goes in the bottom section and the broccoli will lay on top in the vegetable compartment. Put the lid on the container.
Microwave for 3-4 minutes, depending on how you prefer your broccoli to get cooked. You'll have microwave steamed broccoli that's al dente after 3 minutes and it'll be crisp-tender after about 4 minutes.
If you've steamed the microwave broccoli 4 minutes and it's still not soft enough for your liking, continuing cooking the vegetable in 30-second increments until it's just right.
Drain any remaining water that's left in the dish and serve the broccoli immediately.
